OLF were at FIBO with Escape Fitness helping them out on their fantastic stand, which once again stole the show. One of our major new focuses this year was on the Bulgarian Bag, the fitness product which is picking up pace and making people take a second look! Its fast, dynamic exercises are turning heads and making people take this product very seriously. OLF have been working with the Bulgarian Bag for over 2 years now and in this time we have delivered countless awesome educational courses along with getting hundreds of trainers very enthusiastic about the training potential with the bag. OLF are the official training providers for the Bulgarian Bag and we’ve seen great success with all of our customers who have become certified and are now running successful group, bootcamp and PT sessions with the Bulgarian Bag. We know it works and we have seen it working for 2 years, so the chance for us to show the whole of Europe how good this training tool is was one not to be missed.

After stealing the show at Fitpro the Bulgarian Bag was set for a big adventure at FIBO in Germany. Looking great on the Escape Fitness Stand it was only a matter of time before the customers wanted to have a go on the bag.

Challenge!

Over the 4 days at FIBO we ran a simple but effective Bulgarian Bag challenge which gave people the chance to see how easy the bag is to work with but how challenging it can be in a matter of minutes. Have a go with your clients on with the 20/20/20 challenge.

20 spins each way followed by 20 Push ups on the bag.

We had over 30 people try out the challenge, we even had a lady go for the 17kg bag and have a race against another guy. The crowds were flocking the stand whenever the Bulgarian Bag was being used and this was a clear sign that the Bag is set for a Bag’tastic future!

Demo Time!

Across the 4 days we did numerous demos with the bag which all went down a treat. We had the demo team going through a series of prep movements followed by a circuit of spins, arms throws, power snatch’s and combination moves. To finish off each demo we always had a quick team workout using the Bulgarian Bag for circuit training exercises.

Key customers from all countries had exposure to the training tool which is set to take PT, Small group and team based training by storm.

So watch this space as the Bulgarian Bag goes from strength to strength.

Get involved in Bulgarian Bag Training on the next Bulgarian Bag Certification Course with OLF

16th – 17th June in London, click here to find out more info on the course and book your place.

We’re often asked by customers, “what do you cover on the EKI course”, or “I’ve done kettlebells before, why should I do the EKI?”.

This is when we’ll normally go into a long old speech about all the fantastic information that we cover on the EKI! You see, we’ve been teaching this course for over 6 years now and in that time we’ve gathered rather a lot of information. We’ve been lucky enough to spend time with some great athletes, coaches and other trainers. Our knowledge is not ground breaking, it’s not the only thing out there and it’s most definitely not exclusive to us! Nope, we are not scientists, we haven’t spent years in a lab testing our ideas, phillosphies and theories. We have, however, practiced them, used them and validated them time and time again.

Our knowledge is not new, it’s been around for years, we’ve taken it from many other great coaches that we’ve learnt from along the way. We’ve brought our own theories from our back ground in sport, coaching and PT, mixed it all up together to form what we believe is the ultimate in kettlebell courses. Using theory, application, practical skills and most of all, experience, to deliver to you, our customers, a course that will do what it says on the tin!

So, to cut to the chase, here’s a little snippet of what we chat about on our EKI course. It’s only a little bit, but it’s just one of many key factors in effective performance.

Thoracic Pressure

This is a very important technique when it comes to lifting kettlebells, without it, many of these lifts would be a lot harder to perform.

So what is thoracic pressure?

I like to use the analogy of a plastic bottle. Get a plastic bottle, take the top off it and try to crush it and bend it, this should be very easy to do. Now, blow into it so it fills out the bottle and then put the cap on tight. Try to crush or bend the bottle now, you’ll find it quite a lot harder. This is basically what your thorax is like. The rib cage being the bottles structure and the lungs being the air pocket. If we breathe in deep, raise our chest and tighten up, our upper body becomes very strong, just like the bottle with the top on it. By creating this stiffness we will have a good structure to press against and therefore it should be a lot easier to lift heavy kettlebells.

To feel this thoracic pressure for yourself, stand up tall and take a deep breath allowing your chest to raise and your thoracic spine to extend. This position across the torso is your strongest position to be in when lifting and you’ll find it very hard to bend and flex when you are this tight. You’ll have to be under some heavy loads before your thoracic spine goes. You can use thoracic pressure to your advantage in many lifts and in varying degrees. A good example of when to use and when not, is in the windmill. When we go down in a windmill, although we need to be strong to support the arm, if we hold a high level of thoracic pressure it will actually restrict us from bending and flexing in the spine to get down to the floor. So as we’re going down it is a good idea to allow the air to escape slowly. Then as we return to standing if we breathe in we’ll help to extend and straighten our spine, thus bringing us back up easily. Give it a go, it will make a huge difference!

Another example of when to use it is in a front squat, with two heavy kettlebells in front of you it’s very important to create tension and tightness through the thoracic in order to maintain a strong spine through the movement. In a squat you should pressurise before going into flexion, as you’re driving out of the squat you can release the pressure under tension so as not to lose it completely.

So there you go, just a little snippet of what we discuss on the EKI. There’s a whole lot more as well! If you’re looking for a kettlebell course that gives you the how’s and why’s behind this awesome training tool. Get yourself on the EKI!

Earlier this month OLF had their annual trip to the Fitpro Convention in Loughborough. This years was set to be an exciting one for OLF as it was the first time we’d be showing off our amazing Bulgarian Bags to the Industry. We also had a number of superb challenges for customers to take part in on our stand.

It turned out to be a great convention for us, getting nearly 100 people into our Bulgarian Bag sessions, 2 of which were in the Escape Fitness Room. OLF always new the Bulgarian Bag was going to be a popular training product and the feedback from trainers taking part most definitely confirmed that! With in minutes, trainers were being challenged mentally and physically with the technical aspects of the bag. But, they also had loads of fun, playing some games and taking part in one of Tommy’s special team workouts. The Bulgarian Bag is rapidly gaining the interest of all trainers and coaches for it’s dynamic, exciting workouts and the great results it gets. If you’ve not had a chance to experience what it can do, check out the link and get involved with our next Bulgarian Bag Certification.

A Big thanks to Escape Fitness, as they filmed the entire Bulgarian Bag session and shortly we’ll be releasing this footage for you to see the great workouts and exercises we did.

Bulgarian Bag Arm Throw

On the OLF stand, 2012′s show was all about getting trainers working! We wanted to see was really up for a challenge, because at OLF we don’t do things by halves! We set up a couple if brilliant competitions to win a place on an OLF course. The only thing the customers had to do was beat everyone to the winning post and hit the best numbers in our challenges.

We had a great competition in our Kettlebell Overhead Swing Challenge. Competitors had to get their max repetition OH swing in 2 minutes. It was very close at the top of the leader board, but coming out on top for the girls was Alex Taylor from Girls Love Fitness, with a massive 70 swings with 12kg. Well done Alex, great effort.

For the Guys, again it was tough at the top, but coming out as the winner was Chris Wane from Funky Pump Fitness, with an awesome 73 reps with 24kg. Superb effort Chris!

Our Olympic Weightlifting Challenge was just as tough and well fought out by the contenders. They had to perform as many power cleans in 2 minutes.

For the Girls, again it was Alex Taylor who took top spot with a brilliant 50 reps with 30kg. Closely followed by our friend at Trigger Point, Jamie with 47 and then Sarah Langridge with 41 reps. Top work girls.

In the Guys competition it was fierce at the top but with a massive 45 reps with 50kg, Ritchie Januszek from Escape Fitness took the title.

The winners of these competitions all get a free place on one of our great OLF courses. Now that was worth the effort wasn’t it!

Why Olympic Lifting? At OLF we love our Olympic Lifting! Our years of experience have shown us exactly what it can do for us in

Why Olympic Lifting?

At OLF we love our Olympic Lifting! Our years of experience have shown us exactly what it can do for us in our own training and with our clients, but time and time again we’re asked by trainers and clients ‘is this really for me?’ and ‘I don’t think my client

base will go for this.’ For this reason we’ve put together a number of reasons why we really believe not only that anyone can do it, but also that everyone SHOULD do it.

The human body is designed the same, whether it belongs to an Olympian or a sedentary average Joe; so it also needs to be trained in the same way. This might come as a surprise to a lot of people but it’s true. The difference between Olympians and the rest of us is ability, this is obvious, but what unites our species is that essentially we are the same!

As our bodies our designed in the same manner there is no reason that our bodies should not be trained in the same way. What differs is the load, intensity, frequency, duration, not the actual movements or exercises.

As a species we all need to Squat, Bend, Lunge, Push, Pull and rotate; these are the movements that allow us to get on with everyday life, and it is from these very movements that exercises can be derived. This is indisputable.

Why then don’t we train these movements?

Even if we do train these movements independently we could save a lot of time if we were able to combine them. This is where the Olympic Lifts come in. The Olympic Lifts are these movements- all of them, all at once!

Take the Snatch for example, in one exercise you have a Bend as you pick the weight up off the ground, you have a Pull as you pull yourself under the bar and you have a Squat as you stand the bar up while you Press against the bar.

If you look at the Clean and Jerk you have all of the above movements plus you have a Lunge when you perform the Split Jerk.

If Olympians and athletes of the highest calibre perform these lifts because they help them to move better, so too should everyone else. If everyday people should be doing these lifts to help them move better, it is then every trainers responsibility to be able to teach these lifts.

What Does This Mean for You as a Trainer?

The reasons why trainers need to learn to teach the Olympic Lifts:

· So that they and their clients can enjoy the benefits of the Olympic Lifts (above).

· So that they and their clients can perform these lifts both safely and correctly.

· To better understand how the human body functions.

So to summarise, everyone can benefit from training their bodies to move in the ways that they were designed to be moved, be it office workers, manual workers, stay at home mums, the elderly and weekend warriors.

So far this year OLF have run two brilliant Bulgarian Bag Certification Courses. One at HQ in London and one in Dublin. It was out first time with the Bulgarian Bag in Dublin and the Irish loved it! Over the last two years OLF have been working closely with the Suples and the IBBC to develop the very best in education for this unique product. The two day IBBC Course is a big challenge for trainers, it’s full of exercises, technique learning and great workouts.

This is what some of our customers have said about Bulgarian Bag training.

“The IBBC Course is an awesome one. Steve and Tommy push you to your limits physically but in a fun way! Lots of technical information and practical application helped me understand the bag and enabled me to walk away from the course loving and wanting to spread the word to get everyone bag fit!” Anne Channevy

The Bulgarian bag is really starting to take off in the UK, trainers, coaches and enthusiasts are starting to see the benefits of this dynamic tool. Good news for everyone!

The Bulgarian Bag is great training tool for all clients, it’s easy to learn but hard to master. It takes time to really learn the unique BB exercises and for that reason you’ll be working with your clients for many years with this tool. It is also very adaptable for different training outcomes so you can use the BB for many different goals; metabollic effect, power, endurance, posture, range of motion, anaerobic and aerobic training and so many more. The BB is hugely versatile, in the gym, at home or outdoors a BB workout is always challenging and fun.

If you’re looking for a training tool with brilliant crossovers to sport, general health and overall fitness then get BAG FIT with the Bulgarian Bag!

Want to know more, OLF will be showing off the Bulgarian Bag at this years FitPro Convention. We’ll be doing demos, sessions and competitions so it’s a great opportunity to find out more about the Bulgarian bag.

The kettlebell or girya (Russian: ?????) is a cast-iron weight resembling a cannonball with a handle, used to perform ballistic exercises that combine cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training.

Kettlebells are a traditional Russian training tool and have been used by strongmen for hundreds of years. More recently they have enjoyed somewhat of a revival, and can now be found in gyms and leisure centres all over the world.

The American Council on Exercise (ACE), America’s leading authority on fitness, included kettlebells among the top ten fitness trends:

“ The reason for the surge in kettlebell training is that it gets back to basic training that requires functional, whole body fitness. . . . a great way to get a whole body workout in a relatively short period of time. ”

—– Press Release, December 9, 2008

Why Kettlebells?

A kettlebell is a fantastic tool due to the handle being outside of the mass of the bell. This creates an extra axis for movements like the swing and snatch, meaning the body has to overcome and develop as well as absorb momentum. They are completely versatile and have been described as a hand held gym.

There is an extremely high metabolic cost of throwing these weights around. Your workout will create muscle mass, which burns calories and increases your resting metabolism. There is no better way to burn fat.

Finally, busy people want bang for buck. Kettlebells can be the solution to trying to squeeze cardio, strength AND flexibility training in an already overbooked schedule. Because of the intensive nature, the workout duration can be kept short. Best of all, they are so small and portable that training can take place in your bedroom!

Who’s it for?

If you’re an athlete, a casual gym user, undertaking rehab work, are a strength and conditioning coach or PT, then kettlebells are more than likely a tool that you’ll end up using and benefitting from using. They’re suitable for people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, though it’s advisable to speak to a kettlebell instructor or health professional if you’re suffering from any acute injuries or illnesses.

What This Means for the Trainer

While it’s great that Joe Public is being exposed to one of the most fantastic and versatile pieces of kit in any self-respecting athlete’s repertoire, like anything else, if used incorrectly they can do as much harm as good. Our 2 day Extreme Kettlebell Instructor course is now in its 6th year of existence, and is designed to teach the fitness professional or enthusiast how to safely perform, demonstrate and teach a wide range of kettlebell exercises. During this time we have trained thousands of trainers around the world and have honed our skills and knowledge to the point where our customers’ recommendations generate the vast majority of our new business, and people just keep on coming back for more.

Click here for a clip of one our most recent courses.

Here are some of our customers who’ve put what they’ve learned on the EKI01 course into practice and have gone on to achieve great things:

Eric Walton

Eric completed the EKI course with us back in 2010 at a course that took place in York. He had used the bells for a while prior to this, which had helped him lose a significant amount of weight, but then wanted a better understanding of kettlebell lifting, and to start his own classes. He now runs a number of great classes in Retford.

Click here to see some of his training.

Claire Withers

Claire is a PT who completed our EKI course right back in 2008 in Manchester. She is an ex military PTI and currently a very successful kettlebell trainer in Northern Ireland. Since completing the EKI01 and EKI02 courses, Claire also went on to do the Bulgarian Bag Specialist course that we run.

Click here to see Claire putting together a kettlebell circuit.

Customer Testimonials

‘I’ve had some training in KBs already, but wanted to cement my knowledge and have someone assess me to make sure I’m safe. BJ and Steve were both excellent at instructing and giving feedback. I’m now looking forward to practicing, sharing knowledge and then coming back for more on the EKI02!’

Anna Plumridge

‘Thank you! A weekend well spent and loads of quality tips to take away from this!’

Everyone from Joe Public, to athletes, to Personal Trainers and Strength Coaches need to learn the Olympic Lifts so they are able to safely and competently perform and if necessary teach these lifts.

We know that the Olympic Lifts are important for athletes and sports people alike because of the physical skills and attributes that they develop. The Olympic Lifts develop speed, power, coordination, flexibility, range of motion, better posture, they are highly metabolic and they can burn fat.

But can they do this for us as trainers and more importantly can they do this for our clients the: office workers, manual workers, stay at home mums, elderly and weekend warriors?

In a short answer they can do a lot and here is why:

The human body is designed the same whether it belongs to an Olympian or an everyday Joe, it also needs to be trained in the same way. This might come as a surprise to a lot of people out there but it’s true. The difference between Olympians and the rest of us is ability, this is obvious, but what unites our species is that essentially we are the same!

As our bodies our designed in the same manner there is no reason that our bodies should not be trained in the same way. What differs is the load, intensity, frequency, duration and not the actual movements or exercises.

Movement Patterns

As a species we all need to Squat, Bend, Lunge, Push, Pull and rotate, these are the movements that allow us to exist and it is from these very movements that exercises can be derived. This is unquestionable.

If Olympians and athletes of the highest calibre perform these lifts because they help them to move better so too should everyone else. If everyday people should be doing these lifts to help them move better it is then every trainers responsibility to be able to teach these lifts.

The reasons why trainers need to learn to teach the Olympic Lifts:

- so their clients can enjoy the benefits of the Olympic Lifts (above)

- so their clients can perform these lifts safely and correctly

- so they get more ‘bang for their buck’ (this refers to getting more out of a movement) from exercises

- to better understand how the human body functions

So if you’re a trainer out there and you don’t know how to teach or implement the Olympic Lifts what are you waiting for? Book on to an Olympic Weightlifting Instructor Course today.
